Loki on pup play
Last night in the UK there was a documentary on pup play. You might have missed it as it was on a major terrestrial TV channel and extensively covered in the press. Needless to say there was also a great deal of understandable angst amongst the puppy community on twitter in the lead up and discussion afterwards.
As a result I thought I’d give my take on pup play – how I got started, what it means to me now and where I think things are headed. But before you judge me, let me be really clear lest my writing let me down: how and what you do in your personal life is totally up to you. Your kinks, how you describe and enjoy them is not for any outsider to dismiss as long as we all agree on the basic rule of consent.
The oldest picture I can find in my photo library of me engaging in pup play is from late 2003, but bear in mind digital photography wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is today so I imagine I’ve been bounding around in some form for the best part of 15 years. Now this isn’t a “I’m an old-guard dog and I know best” type attitude (see above) but I guess my longevity on the scene gives me an idea of the changes.
Pup play definitely didn’t start with me and short of a delve through the Leather Archives I can’t be exactly sure of when it did, but it’s probably been around since the beginnings of SF BDSM culture.[citation required] In general though it was mostly about the humiliation and control aspect – the handler owned a pup and used a collar and leash to control them – dragging them around to humiliate them. All the other accoutrements, like knee pads, tails etc., all followed on from this but I’d argue aren’t necessary to class yourself as a pup (or old guard-dog).
The humiliation, the fetish and the unusualness of it all is what first attracted me to it. I didn’t want to ‘socialise’ with other pups; I wanted to be kept on the floor in conditions way worse than any real dog would ever be allowed to be kept in. I did meet a few other pups back then and even went to a pup play night which wasn’t a great success as there were only two of us there.
This is where I’ve seen the scene evolve: where people pup out at home (maybe with a sexual element, maybe not) they’ll often want to socialise with like-minded people. Often they’re in closed relationships with others so rough and tumble is ok but breeding is not and donning a puppy hood affords a sense of anonymity and community (but boy am I glad to see the custom Mr S ones now, I have no idea who anyone is!).
I think it’s slightly disingenuous for the documentary to have hinted that no-one into pup play does it for the sexual thrills. Although I understand why they may have wanted to skirt around the issue the community has to understand that some people are going to use pup play as a social gathering and others get their kicks from it. This is exactly the kind of dichotomy the furries have been dealing with for years – don’t think that your way of doing things is the way that others should and we’ll all get on just super.

Vacuum cube
A few years ago I tried a vac bed and I really hated it. The noise of the vacuum around my totally enclosed head induced a feeling of claustrophobia I’ve not experienced before or since. But then I tried a vac tower and I loved the ‘suspended’ sensation and that my head was sticking out and I wanted my own.
So thanks to the lovely people at Kink Engineering I now have a vac cube (rather than an elongated tower) and it’s fantastic. I chose a black and yellow colour scheme (some of their custom work is amazing) and also an optional rear port so I can thread electro cables through.
The design is excellent with a non-return valve and ingenious sealing-bar so once the air has been pulled out it maintains the pressure without needing to wreck your vacuum cleaner.
If you’re thinking of getting your own from KE then their default option is to send it without the piping which saves on shipping. In the UK you can get Imperial schedule 40 pipe relatively easily and drilling the holes is dead easy with a step drill. I bought mine online and they even cut it to length for me which saved me an extra step.
Another item crossed off the wish list :)
Milking machines
Someone wondered on twitter whether anyone has experience of both the Venus and SeriousKit milking (wanking) machines so I thought I’d post up my thoughts as a mini review. Note I currently own a Venus but I don’t have any affiliate relationship with them. I’d be glad to hear your thoughts in the comments or on twitter too.
I’ve had the amazing experience of trying both the Venus and SeriousKit out back-to-back on the same day thanks to the amazingly well equipped facilities of Miss Miranda so hopefully this is a reasonable overview.
Both systems use a rubber lined tube connected to a pump to drive the tube up and down on your cock and so simulate a wanking sensation. The SeriousKit requires a separate vacuum pump, the Venus’ is built in to the motor box – both allow the speed to be varied.
The SeriousKit actually pulls a vacuum directly onto the cock which allows it to work even when flaccid – the down side is that is needs a constant gravity fed flow of water-based lube. A second vacuum connection is also needed to remove the lube (or cum or piss…) flow.
Both systems can have electro connected up, although in the Venus’ case this is an aftermarket conductive liner.
So – which is better? If I’m honest, the wanking sensation for both is pretty similar, although the constant lube flow from the SeriousKit adds a certain something to the experience. But this is all massively offset by the setup and tweaking required.
The SeriousKit is also pretty noisy as you have the hiss of the vaccum, slurp of the lube and whatever vacuum pump you have running as well (although this could be in a separate room). The Venus isn’t silent, but on low speeds it’s pretty imperceptible.
The Venus is also a bit cheaper (UK punters, look at the costs of importing direct as opposed to UK-based resellers – you might be surprised that even after shipping, VAT & import duties it’s still cheaper to get it from the US) although I admit that the SeriousKit certainly “looks” the part.
My conclusion – if you’re a home player then the Venus is probably the machine for you. It’s easier to setup, quieter and cheaper and gives you 95% of the sensation of the SeriousKit. 9 out of 10 submissives can’t tell the difference in a blind test :)

Envy
I thought I’d start the new year with a wordy post for once.
I’ve spoken to a couple of people recently and some of their sentiments and thoughts echoed some of mine so I thought this might be a vaguely common thing worth writing about.
The kink community is actually a small one. We know a lot of each other and even if not directly, we’ve often played with a mutual acquaintance. We’re also narcissistic creatures that like to post and tweet about our adventures (not that this is a bad thing of itself!) and it’s difficult not to get caught in a cycle of garnering reblogs and favourites.
One of my friends spoke about “sub envy” but I think it works both ways. I as a sub have definitely felt pangs of jealousy when I see people playing with tops I like. Conversely when I’m topping and I see a favourite sub off having fun with someone else it’s difficult to stop my mind occasionally going “but they’re mine!”.
Here’s the important thing: those that are free spirits are absolutely that and we should take pleasure from their joy and experiences with others; the next time we play with them we can learn from that too.
So the next time you feel a little pang of envy, use that energy for good. If it’s a top you really want to play with, take that scene you’ve just loved as an opener. If you’ve seen a cute little sub you’d love to wrap in rope then let them know. BUT don’t be creepy and don’t be offended if you get a polite knock-back: I’m not providing topping-as-a-service – there has to be some kind of connection with the people I play with.
